Radio Drama UA/UK Playwriting Competition

The competition organised by the National Radio Company of Ukraine and the British Council in partnership with Mystetskyi Arsenal offers a unique opportunity for writers to prove themselves in the genre of radio play. The winning piece will be heard by hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians.

The joint British-Ukrainian competition is designed to promote the development of the radio drama genre in Ukraine. The winning piece will be produced and broadcasted by the National Radio Company of Ukraine in January 2019. The winning author will be rewarded with a prize of 25,000 UAH.

To participate, please fill out the online form. In the form, you will have to attach the text of the play, as well as its synopsis in PDF or DOC. We recommend you to have a look at radio playwriting tips by BBC World Drama herePlay submission lasts from April 25th to June 30th, 2018.

Winners will be determined by the jury, which will include representatives of the National Radio Company of Ukraine, Mystetskyi Arsenal, British production company Rockethouse, and Ukrainian experts in literature and theatre.

Short-listed participants will participate in a playwriting workshop conducted by British BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4 playwright Frances Byrnes. During a week, writers will work on their manuscripts under her mentorship and will find out the professional secrets and nuances of work in this genre.

Further on, Matt Thompson from Rockethouse will conduct a training on the peculiarities of radio play creation, working with actors, choice of audio effects and musical accompaniment, as well as the promotion of the pieces for directors and producers of the National Radio Company of Ukraine and other platforms who work or would like to work with radio drama. Participation conditions and dates will be announced in Summer through the National Radio Company of Ukraine, the British Council, and Mystetskyi Arsenal.
