Presentation of the Catalogue of Byzantine and Old Rus’ Seals in Kyiv

A presentation of the scholarly catalogue "Byzantine and Rus’ian Seals in the Byzantine Style Found on the Territory of Ukraine" by historians Oleksandr Alfiorov and Werner Seibt took place in Kyiv. The publication features over 2,000 images of medieval seals from the collection of the Sheremetev Museum and introduces previously unknown historical sources into academic circulation.

In the center of Kyiv, at a modern and welcoming bookstore, a lecture-presentation of the catalogue "Byzantine and Rus’ian Seals in the Byzantine Style Found on the Territory of Ukraine" was held. The book was co-authored by Ukrainian historian Oleksandr Alfiorov and Austrian scholar Werner Seibt.

This English-language academic catalogue presents 2,000 images of seals from the collection of the Sheremetev Museum. Work on the publication began in 2013 and was completed in early 2022. The catalogue contains many previously unpublished sources on the history of Rus’ and medieval Ukraine.

These ancient seals are an important resource for the study of Ukrainian sphragistics, palaeography, prosopography, iconography, and the church and political history of the medieval Rus’ state. The authors also introduce into scholarly discourse previously unknown names of church figures, including Metropolitan Nykyfor III of Kyiv and several bishops.

The publication is primarily aimed at researchers, historians, cultural scholars, educators, and students. Thanks to the initiative of the publishers, authors, and the Sheremetev Museum, part of the print run has been distributed to academic institutions and libraries in Ukraine and across Europe. In the future, an open-access digital version of the catalogue is also planned.
