People are not afraid to be led, they are afraid to be not respected

The director of Goethe Institute Finland Mikko Fritze talks on what qualities and skills should cultural leaders have.

WHAT IS CULTURAL LEADERSHIP LIKE?

Cultural leadership is not like a factory where you can like produce something, and you go by step by step, and you can accelerate or change the way of producing. This is always dealing with the uncertainty. So, that’s, I think, the biggest challenge in cultural management.

WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS SHOULD CULTURAL LEADERS HAVE?

If you really manage this process, I think, what you most need is trust. You have to trust in the people who do that work, you have to trust in your team, so you don’t lead by telling them what they have to do, but you lead them by trusting them. Of course, you stay the leader, because I don’t think, people are afraid to be led, they are not afraid to have a boss, but they are afraid to be not respected. So, if you don’t respect your people, if you don’t feel with them, it’s very hard to lead.
